2017 PW Awards: Promotion of the Year

Published

on

Winner: New Japan Pro Wrestling

“For the second consecutive year, it wasn’t even close. New Japan Pro Wrestling is as close to as perfect of a wrestling promotion as you’re going to get. From Wrestle Kingdom to the G1 Climax, every event feels so important. We currently live in the golden age of wrestling. And right now, NJPW is at the top of the heap when it comes to overall match quality and content.” – Dave Reno

“This one was not easy for me to choose… but NJPW put on some of the best wrestling matches in the history of wrestling this year, which gave them the top spot. It’s crazy to me that only a couple years removed from losing what was seen as their biggest stars (Finn Balor, AJ Styles, Gallows and Anderson, Nakamura) that NJPW is continuing to get better and better every year. From the Styles v. Nakamura classic that kicked off 2016, to getting ready to kickoff 2018 with Jericho v. Omega… they have to be given the top spot.” – Chris Langevin

Runner Up: NXT

“It feels like we’re in the midst of a second coming of sorts for NXT. Things got a little choppy in 2016 which is bound to happen when you’re a “feeder league” for the big guy. With some major additions and some other key stars getting more air time in 2017, we were reminded that great booking and WWE style production can still be absolutely magical.” – DR

Third Place: WWE

“More folks voted for WWE this year than previous years which is a great sign. Although some of them did follow those three letters with the words SmackDown Live when casting those votes, ratings tell us that the same people continue to tune in for both brands week in and week out. It may be a bit of an old argument, but that 3 hour plus  weekly show on Monday night’s just cannot build any momentum as currently constructed. That said, expect 2018 to start off with bang heading into Mania season. All signs point to at least the first half of this year being one of the best for WWE in quite some time. And we all know when WWE succeeds, it’s always a positive for the world of professional wrestling.” – DR
