Four tournament matches on the ninth night of the 2019 Super Junior Tag League from Korakuen Hall. The main event sees Rocky Romero take on his students as he teams with Ryusuke Taguchi to challenge Roppongi 3K. Let’s get started!

Birds of Prey (3-2) def. Tiger Mask & Yuya Uemura (0-4) @ 11:33 via Eagles Ron Miller Special on Uemura – **1/4
Unlike a few of Eagles’ matches, the Ron Miller Special was setup early by attacking Uemura’s knee. That made for a more cohesive finish which I appreciated. Uemura had a nice finishing sequence when he escaped the Turbo Backpack but Birds of Prey used their double team to end his flurry before forcing him to tap.

While not the most exciting, and Ospreay was a little over the top on his selling for Tiger, you can do worse than this match.

El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru (3-2) def. TJP & Clark Connors (0-5) @ 12:18 via Desperado Numbero Dos on Connors – *3/4
Desperado and Kanemaru have their act down and it’s up to their opponents to bring the fire for a good comeback. No one really bought what TJP and Connors were selling which lead to a flat finish. There’s very little to sink your teeth into, the match was by the numbers and offered little in way of drama.

El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori (4-1) def. Volador Jr. & Titán (3-2) @ 14:22 via ELP CR II on Titán – ***1/4
Titán has been stealing the tournament night in and night out. His comebacks worked best here when being gooned on by Bullet Club. Volador Jr. came to play in a major way for the first time in the tournament as well. He had this nice armdrag into a cannonball and cut off ELP’s rope-walking into a top rope Spanish fly. Bullet Club did a good job gooning and ELP finishing Titán by turning his mask around was creative.

This is in the running for the match of the tournament. Everyone played their roles well and Volador came to life for the first time.

Rocky Romero & Ryusuke Taguchi (4-1) def. Roppongi 3K (2-2) @ 23:12 via Romero Small Package on SHO – ***3/4
Now this match is knocking on the door of being called a classic. The last half of the match was Romero and SHO going all out and putting it all on the line. There was a sweet moment with Taguchi where Romero called for “Apollo” in reference to Apollo 55. A very sentimental match in a lot of ways that felt reminiscent of NJPW tag classics.

Definitely the match of the tournament, nothing else is close to what these guys brought to the table. If you’re going to watch anything, make it this match.
