NJPW ‘World Tag League 2018’ (12.3.18) Match Predictions

Published

on

Seeing as the World Tag League is the least engaging time of the year to be a fan of New Japan, each night before the tournament I’ll be making match predictions. On the bottom of every ‘Results & Review’ article I’ll have a tally of my score so that you can keep up and gauge my accuracy. This is my way of trying to keep everyone engaged during the slow months leading up to Wrestle Kingdom. Feel free to give me a hard time on Twitter.

This will be another non-live/VOD show and as such, only the tournament matches will be uploaded. Therefore, I’ll only be predicting the matches that will actually be made available to watch.

World Tag League Tournament Match
Minoru Suzuki & Takashi Iizuka (4-5) vs Shota Umino & Ayato Yoshida (0-9)

If the young lions were to win one, it’d make sense to be against the bumbling madman, Iizuka. Wouldn’t bank money but if you think they’re winning any it’d be one like this.
Prediction: Suzuki & Iizuka

World Tag League Tournament Match
Guerrillas of Destiny (7-2) vs Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi (1-8)

An eight match skid is going to extend to nine as Nagata and Nakanishi face the tag champions. A disappointing run in terms of wins but Nakanishi’s spirit cannot be broken
Prediction: Guerrillas of Destiny

World Tag League Tournament Match
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima (3-6) vs Hangman Page & Yujiro Takahashi (3-6)

Both teams have had disappointing tournaments in terms of wins but Page and Kojima both have been energetic watches. Tencozy have had the bigger wins so I’m leaning that way but this wouldn’t be a surprise either way.
Prediction: Tencozy

World Tag League Tournament Match
Killer Elite Squad (6-3) vs Juice Robinson & David Finlay (6-3)

The success of FinJuice has been one of the tournament’s surprises. Coming off a disappointing G1 Climax, Juice has been able to have a fair amount of success in the tag league. K.E.S. have been a staple of the tag division for year though so if FinJuice get a win it’d be a pretty big upset. I’ll go with the team who has more attention currently in the division.
Prediction: Killer Elite Squad

World Tag League Tournament Match
Jeff Cobb & Michael Elgin (5-4) vs Zack Sabre Jr. & Taichi (5-4)

Sabre and Taichi have been the talk of the tournament at certain points but as the tournament has gone on, their chances of winning as faded. Team Bowser on the other hand has been pretty hot since their disappointing start. I’ll say Cobb and Elgin continue their roll towards the top.
Prediction: Cobb & Elgin

World Tag League Tournament Match
Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano (7-2) vs Togi Makabe & Toa Henare (4-5)

Makabe and Henare has picked up three in a row after a slow start. Henare helped Makabe isolate Iizuka by taking care of Suzuki on the outside, becoming a statement win for the team. Ishii and Yano have been rattling off wins with relative ease an have flown under the radar in the process. Henare’s next task will be to keep Ishii busy while Makabe squares off with Yano but with Yano, you’re never safe.
Prediction: Ishii & Yano

World Tag League Tournament Match
Beretta & Chuckie T. (5-4) vs EVIL & SANADA (7-2)

I’m not sure if a trend is forming but right now it’s been one match Chuckie snaps, the next he wins and then snaps again the match after that. This would be a pretty big upset for EVIL and SANADA. They’re two fixtures of the division and losing to a Chaos B team would be somewhat shocking. Best Friends face their Chaos stablemates the following night so it looks like this trend of snap, fine, snap is going to continue.
Prediction: Best Friends

Predictions
Tournament: 42/63
Overall: 49/76
