Ring of Honor ‘Soaring Eagle Cup’ Recap (10.28.17)

Ring of Honor touched down in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan for the first time and we have some quick thoughts we’d like to share with you about the show. Check them out below!

In a Nutshell: This was a fun show, as expected anytime ROH comes around. This is the third venue I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing ROH Wrestling take place in Michigan after the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn and Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. While the Dearborn venue certainly has its own charm, the Entertainment Hall inside of Soaring Eagle Casino is the perfect venue for ROH. As for the show itself, it’s almost become commonplace for so much New Japan talent to line these shows. While that was missed, it was refreshing to get to spend so much time with the ROH regulars again. Matt Taven and Dalton Castle were the stars of this show. Taven proved that he can hold his own as a top company villain while the show was built around Castle taking the inaugural Soaring Eagle Cup in a wisely booked main event that saw him taking on three heels leaving the fans no other option than to get behind Ring of Honor’s ‘Top Cock’. Castle delivered in spades leading up to his big main event with Cody next month at Final Battle. Here’s a quick look at how it all went down.

Results:

Soaring Eagle Cup Round 1

Dalton Castle defeats Flip Gordon (Bang-a-Rang)

Frankie Kazarian defeats Jay White

Matt Taven defeats Jay Lethal

• Christopher Daniels and Cody Rhodes wrestle to a 15 minute time limit draw

Cody offered to put his title on the line for 5 extra minutes to decide a winner but Daniels would not accept. After Daniels left, Cody gave a shout out to his wife’s family in the crowd (Brandi is from Canton, MI) before putting the title on the line against Emily (his niece by marriage) and a unofficial title change occurs as Cody takes the pin.

INTERMISSION

Matt Taven did a stellar job cutting promos from atop the merch table while attempting to move some merch for The Kingdom.

Silas Young defeats Cheeseburger in a impromptu qualifier since no winner was decided in the Cody vs. Daniels match

Motor City Machine Guns defeat Hangman Page and Nick Jackson and The Dawgs

Soaring Eagle Cup Finals

• Dalton Castle defeats Matt Taven, Frankie Kazarian and Silas Young

Castle eliminates Silas Young via Bang-a-Rang, Kazarian via Ankle Lock and Taven via Bang-a-Rang.

Castle anointed himself as the ‘Top Cock’ after hoisting the trophy which started a chant. Also of note, a fan poured a beer on Taven which prompted Taven to push him, that fan was thrown out. Castle told the crowd he would leave the Soaring Eagle Cup in Mt. Pleasant so the fans could remember when Ring of Honor visited and “kicked ass” and that they would be coming back.
