The Big Takeaway

Baron Corbin cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and came up empty. John Cena defeated Jinder Mahal in the main event after Corbin caused a DQ. Corbin cashed in on the vulnerable champion but was distracted by Cena and Mahal pinned him with a schoolboy cradle.

WWE SmackDown Live Report

WWE aired a video previewing the main event between WWE Champion Jinder Mahal and John Cena.

Jinder Mahal Opened The Show

The Singh Brothers were on the ramp and introduced the WWE Champion. The ring was decorated for India’s Independence Day and for Mahal. The Modern-Day Maharaja introduced a bunch of Bhangra dancers and then brought in a woman to sing the Indian National Anthem. Mahal then cut a heel promo on both Cena and Shinsuke Nakamura. Before Mahal could speak to his people in Punjabi, the WWE Champion was interrupted by Nakamura who received a huge reaction. Nakamura said, SummerSlam would be the day Mahal loses the WWE Title. The WWE Universe chanted “Yes”

  • This was a good opening segment

Tom Phillips said Ric Flair is resting comfortably but is still in critical condition. All the announcers wished Flair a speedy recovery.

Natalya def. Becky Lynch

SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi was on commentary for the match. It was a short but a good back-and-forth match. Lynch delivered an enzuigiri but missed a top rope leg drop. Natalya applied the Sharpshooter as Lynch tapped out.

  • Postmatch, Natalya attacked Lynch and re applied the Sharpshooter. Naomi came in and made the save. Carmella and James Ellsworth came out. Carmella wished Natalya and Naomi lucked in their match at SummerSlam. Ellsworth pointed at the MITB briefcase and said whoever won on Sunday would lose.

Backstage: Lana and Tamina

Tamina confronted Lana backstage, wondering why she doesn’t have a match. Lana said Tamina wasn’t ready and people don’t fear her. Lana said Tamina could become a destructive force ready to “crush” if she listens to her.

Backstage: Daniel Bryan and The Usos

The Usos approached Daniel Bryan in his office. Bryan was ready to talk about Sweet Beats. Jimmy wanted to know which members of New Day they were facing at SummerSlam? Bryan said it would be Big E and Xavier Woods. The Usos were fine with that but wanted a match with Kofi Kingston and Woods tonight because of what happened last week. Bryan made the match.

Chad Gable vs. Rusev ends in a Double Countout

Gable got to shine early by delivering an over-head belly-to-belly suplex. Rusev responded by tossing Gable into the steel steps. Rusev then tossed Gable over the announcer’s table as the referee counted them out.

  • Postmatch, Rusev applied the Accolade to Gable on the announcer table. Rusev was about to cut a promo, but Randy Orton delivered an RKO Outta Nowhere. (This was very good and the RKO got a huge reaction)

Tensions flare between A.J. Styles, Kevin Owens & Shane McMahon

A.J. Styles came out, received a pretty big reaction and called out Shane McMahon. Shane came out and received a pretty good reaction. Styles attempted to apologize to Shane-O-Mac. Shane accepted, and believed it was an accident last week. Shane said, there would an issue if Styles put his hands on him at SummerSlam. Styles was not a fan of this. Kevin Owens entered the scene and attempted to cause more tension between Shane and Styles. Owens offered his hand but Styles didn’t shake it. Owens and Styles then had another shoving contest. Styles went to punch Owens but he ducked and almost punched Shane. Shane blocked the punch, and had an argument with Styles. Owens tried to superkick Styles, but Styles ducked and he nailed Shane as the segment ended.

  • This was a good segment and everyone was great.

The Usos def. Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods (w/Big E) — Non-Title Match

The New Day cut a promo before the match. It was short but we got to see a good back-and-forth match. Highlights included The New Day running wild early delivering a series of double team moves. Woods went for the Midnight Hour but Jimmy pushed him off the top turnbuckle and then clipped the knees of Kingston. The Usos delivered a super kick to Kingston and got the win.

Fashion Peaks with Fandango and Tyler Breeze

  • Fandango and Tyler Breeze are great. Watch the full video above if you’re a fan of these skits.

John Cena def. WWE Champion Jinder Mahal — Non Title Match

Cena and Mahal went back-and-forth for the early part of the match. After the commercial break, Cena made his signature comeback by delivering a shoulder tackle, a Blue Thunder Bomb and the Five Knuckle Shuffle. The Singh Brothers pulled Mahal out of the ring. Cena chased Mahal outside the ring. The Singh Brothers grabbed Cena’s leg and Mahal took him down. Mike Chioda tossed the Singh Brothers from the match.

Mahal was distracted so Cena applied the STF but Mahal got to the bottom rope. Mahal escapes an AA attempt, drops Cena on the top rope and delivers a high knee. Cena escapes the Khallas and delivers an Attitude Adjustment but Mahal kicks out. Cena then delivered a middle rope AA and had the match won. But Corbin attacks Cena as the referee calls for the bell.

  • Postmatch, Corbin blasts Cena with the MITB briefcase and walks away. Corbin then turned back around and cashed in his briefcase.

WWE Championship Match: Jinder Mahal def. Baron Corbin

The referee and announcer made it clear that this MITB cash in counted. Corbin sees Cena on the apron so he punches him off. Mahal rolls up Corbin with a schoolboy and gets the win.

  • Uhhh….this was unexpected

Overall Thoughts on SmackDown Live

This was unexpected, but I didn’t mind that Corbin lost. It wasn’t the right time for Corbin to win the MITB and it would have been a mistake if he won the WWE title. Guessing this loss will put heat on Corbin and will beat Cena at SummerSlam.
