SmackDown Live Report: Orton and Nakamura set to clash next week

Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Jinder Mahal and Rusev in the main event. After the match, Orton delivered an RKO to Nakamura. The build to Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon continued as Owens officiated a match and cost Sami Zayn a victory against Aiden English.

WWE Champion Jinder Mahal Opens The Show

The Singh Brothers came out and introduced the WWE Champion Jinder Mahal came out and hyped up his tag team match for  tonight. Mahal then cut a heel promo and the crowd laughed after Shinsuke Nakamura made a fool of him last week. Samir and Sunil Singh apologized to Mahal and the great nation of India for what Nakamura did. The Singh Brothers then went on their knees and touched Mahal’s feet.

Nakamura came out and received a pretty big reaction. Nakamura got the early advantage on Mahal but was doubled teamed by the Singh Brothers. Randy Orton ran out and made the save. But Rusev also ran out and laid out Orton with a super kick. Mahal laid out Nakamura with the Khallas as the heels stood strong.

  • A fine segment to open the show but Mahal’s promo remain the same and doesn’t seem to change anytime soon.

Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin def. The Ascension

The Ascension took control of Gable for most part of the match until he made the tag to Benjamin. Benjamin looked great as he ran wild by delivering a flying clothesline to Viktor for a near fall. Finish came with Gable sending Konor to the floor and Benjamin delivering the Lie Detector to Viktor for the win.

Renee Young interviewed Baron Corbin

Baron Corbin said that John Cena distracted him and cost him a shot at the WWE Title and then ran off to Raw. Corbin said Styles guaranteed him a match for the U.S. Title so he’s going to cash in tonight.

WWE U.S. Championship Match: A.J. Styles def. Tye Dillinger to retain the U.S. Title

A.J. Styles came out and said the U.S. Title challenge is open. Tye Dillinger came to answer the challenge but was jumped from behind by Corbin. Dillinger fought Corbin off and tossing him into the ring post. Dillinger then slid into the ring as the match finally began.

A really quick match as Styles fought off Dillinger onslaught by applying the Calf Crusher for a quick submission victory.

  • Corbin attacked Dillinger and tossed him into the barricade after the match. Styles fought off Corbin by delivering a low running forearm.

Backstage: Jinder Mahal and Rusev

Rusev said this tonight’s tag match is about revenge. Rusev said he isn’t Mahal’s friend and after the match he’s coming after the WWE Title.

Bobby Roode def. Mike Kannelis (w/Maria Kannelis) 

Another short match as Roode won after delivering a spine buster and followed it up with the Glorious DDT.

Kevin Owens Promo

Aiden English was inside the ring singing a song but was interrupted by Owens and asked English to leave the ring. Owens showed footage from last week of Shane McMahon costing him the U.S. Title. Owens said SmackDown Live was Shane’s personal playground. Shane came out and said Owens chose Corbin as his hand-picked referee. Shane explained that Corbin was being biased towards Owens so he had to step in. Shane then ordered Owens to leave to the ring so the next match can begin.

  • This was fine and just building up to an eventual match between Owens and Shane.

Aiden English def. Sami Zayn — Kevin Owens as the special referee

Owens was on commentary for the match. Highlight of the match was Zayn delivering a tope con hilo to English to the floor. Owens left the announcers tables and wanted to show everyone how to officiate a match. Owens took the referee’s shirt and put it on. Zayn was distracted by all this as English took advantage. Owens then delivered a pop-up powerbomb to Zayn. Owens then delivered a fast count so English can secure the victory.

Backstage: Renee Young interviewed Shane McMahon

Shane McMahon said the match doesn’t count and should get erased from the record books. Shane then heard that Owens left the building, so he followed after him.

Backstage: Dasha Fueutes interviewed Dolph Ziggler

Dolph Ziggler cut another wild promo and teased that his new character will debut next week.

SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos def. The New Day

Xavier Woods came out and accompanied Big E and Kofi Kingston to the ring. Woods was wearing a knee brace and wore a signing saying ““It’s sore”

The Usos took control of Big E after the commercial break until Kingston got the hot tag and ran wild. Kingston applied a dragon sleeper to Jey but Jimmy broke it up. Kingston rolled up Jey but didn’t see the blind tag. Jimmy rolled up Kingston and got the win.

  • Another short match and now Usos get to pick the stipulation for their upcoming Tag Team Championship match against the New Day.

Backstage: James Ellsworth interviewed Carmella

Dasha was about to introduce Carmella but Ellsworth shooed her away. Ellsworth introduced Carmella. Carmella was upset at Ellsworth for opening him mouth and ruining her plan from last week. Natalya walked in and said Carmella will be the Baron Corbin of the women’s division. Natalya said that next week she will get her revenge when she faces Carmella. Naomi approached Natalya from behind and said in two weeks she will get her rematch for the SmackDown Women’s Title.

Tamina (w/Lana) def. Tina Stock

Lana was in the ring and introduced Tamina. This match was not good as Tamina won after delivering a super kick. Lana had the mic and was on the floor shouting instructions.

Fashion Files is back!

We had another Fashion Files segment with Fandango and Tyler Breeze. These segment have gone on way too long. The segment ended with all clues pointing to Aiden English.

Shinsuke Nakamura & Randy Orton def. Rusev & Jinder Mahal

The heels took control of Nakamura early on until Orton got the hot tag. Orton went for the RKO but Mahal bailed to the floor. Orton delivered a backbreaker to Mahal on the barricade. The heels took control after the break as both Mahal and Rusev continued to ware Orton down.Orton made the hot tag to Nakamura after Mahal ran shoulder first into the ring post.

Nakamura delivered a series of kicks to Rusev and then delivered a running knee strike to Rusev in the corner for a near fall. Nakamura went for the exploder but Rusev countered by delivered a series of elbows. Nakamura applied a cross arm breaker but Mahal broke it up. Orton delivered a draping DDT to Mahal. Rusev avoided an RKO attempt but took a kick to the head. Nakamura delivered knee strike from the turnbuckle and followed it up with the Kinshasa for the win.

  • A fine match as the crowd was behind both Nakamura and Orton. Nakamura and Orton celebrated after the match. Orton then delivered an RKO outta nowhere which sets up their match for next week.

Overall

An average episode of SmackDown Live. With no upcoming pay-per-view until October, WWE did a good job by advertising matches for the upcoming weeks.
