WWE SmackDown Live Report!

Kevin Owens demands a rematch for the United States Title

A.J. Styles came out, welcomed everyone to the house he built and said the U.S. Title challenge is open. Kevin Owens came out and believed he was robbed of a victory following a controversial call by Shane McMahon who also came out to the ring. Shane wasn’t on board with Owens getting a rematch, but Styles obliged and accepted Owens’ challenge. Owens also wanted to choose his own referee for the match. Shane said it’s fine but if he loses, Owens couldn’t challenge for the U.S. Title as long as Styles was the champ.

  • A fine segment to open the show. This is very likely leading to match between Owens and Shane.

GM Office: Daniel Bryan with WWE Champion Jinder Mahal and the Singh Brothers

Daniel Bryan was on the phone but was interrupted by the Singh Brothers. Then introduced Mahal who called himself an unstoppable champion. Bryan says Mahal couldn’t win a match without the Singh Brothers. Bryan made a two-on-one handicap match between Nakamura and the Singh Brothers.

Backstage: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

Owens knew he could find Sami Zayn backstage because he hasn’t done much since being moved over to SmackDown Live. Owens asked Zayn to referee his match tonight.

Bobby Roode def. Aiden English

Aiden English was in the ring singing a song but was interrupted by the former NXT Champion Bobby Roode who got a huge reaction. Highlights included Roode delivering a blockbuster to English off the tope rope. Roode delivered a spinebuster and won after delivering the Glorious DDT.

Renee Young Interviewed Bobby Roode

Roode congratulated Bryan and Shane for breaking the bank and cashing in by signing the hottest free agent. Roode said that SmackDown Live has gone from great to Glorious.

  • This was a really good debut and Roode was completely over. What’s interesting is that Roode played the babyface in the match and the crowd loved his post-match promo. He played a heel in NXT. Interesting to see who’s Roode’s first big program will be against? A.J. Styles maybe?

Shelton Benjamin returned to WWE and is part of SmackDown Live

Chad Gable approached Bryan backstage and was tired hearing about Kurt Angle and Jason Jordan. Bryan said he made a deal with Angle who helped him sign an old friend. Benjamin entered the room and got a big reaction. Gable was excited and said he followed Benjamin’s career. Bryan said that Benjamin and Gable will team up next week. Gable was thrilled and left. Benjamin shook Bryan’s hand and said “We’ll see how this goes.”

  • Happy to see Shelton Benjamin back with the WWE. Let’s see how this turns out. Benjamin and Gable can make a really good tag team.

Backstage: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

Zayn found Owens backstage and refused to be the referee for his match because he remembered the things that Owens did to him.

SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos def. Zack Ryder & Mojo Rawley — Non-title Match

Short match as The Usos won after Jey Uso delivered a super kick to Zack Ryder.

  • The Usos cut a quick promo after the match saying the tag team division is on lock.

Shinsuke Nakamura def. The Singh Brothers (w/Jinder Mahal)

The Singh Brothers competed in dress clothes. A short squash match as Nakamura won after Samir tapped out to a triangle hold.

Postmatch

Mahal attacked Nakamura after the match. The King of Strong Style fended of Mahal’s attack and laid out the WWE Champion with a Kinshasa.

  • This was fine. After losing at SummerSlam, Nakamura looked strong as he laid out Mahal and the Singh Brothers.

Backstage: Kevin Owens with Breezango

Fandango and Tyler Breeze asked if they can referee the match? Owens said no and told them to scram. Baron Corbin approached Owens and said he will referee the match. Corbin said if Owens win he will give him the first shot at the U.S. Title

In-Ring Promo: SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya and Ms. Money in the Bank Carmella with James Ellsworth

New SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya came out and cut a promo about unplugging the glow. Natalya was interrupted by Carmella and James Ellsworth. Carmella said she just wanted to remind Natalya about the MITB briefcase.

Naomi & Becky Lynch def. SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya & Carmella

Carmella wanted nothing to do with the match and stood on the ring apron. Natalya worked most of the match and did a fine job. Natalya forcefully made the tag to Carmella who was arguing with Ellsworth. Lynch immediately delivered a Bexploder, and Naomi got the pin after delivering a split-legged moonsault.

Dolph Ziggler returned to SmackDown Live

Dolph Ziggler returned to SmackDown Live and was interviewed by Dasha Fuentes. Ziggler said he was going to start doing everything like a star of WWE would do.

Backstage: Lana and Tamina

Lana told Tamina that her run to the SmackDown Womens’ Title begins next week.

Backstage: A.J. Styles and Baron Corbin

Corbin approached Styles and told him that he’s the referee for the U.S. Title match. Styles said Corbin could accept him U.S Title open challenge after he beats Owens.

WWE United States Championship Match: A.J. Styles def. Kevin Owens — Baron Corbin as the special referee

Owens got the advantage early after delivering a fallaway slam into the barricade. Styles came by delivering a fireman’s carry neck breaker for a two count. Styles applied the Calf Crusher, Owens was about to grab the bottom rope but Styles pulled him away from the ropes.

Corbin told Styles to break the hold because Owens grabbed the bottom rope (which he didn’t) Styles and Corbin began to argue as A.J. was pushed into the referee by Owens. Owens rolled up Styles with a schoolboy, Corbin delivered a fast count but Styles kicked out. Shane ran down to the ring to make sure Corbin was calling the match fairly.

Owens delivered a low blow to Styles, Corbin was about to count but Shane pulled him out of the ring. Corbin was furious at Shane as he threw his referee shirt at him and left. Owens was no pleased about this. Styles got the win soon after delivering the Phenomenal Forearm as Shane counted the three.

  • It was a fine match. The feud between Owens and Styles has been getting quite stale and both superstars need different WWE stars to feud with.

Overall

It was a good episode of SmackDown Live and the debut of Bobby Roode was Glorious. Interested to see who both Roode and Styles next challenges will be. Looks like the Mahal and Nakamura feud is continuing. Would be nice if the feud ends with Nakamura winning the WWE Title.
