This Week in Wrestling: Austin vs. McMahon is born

on

In the summer of 1997, Stone Cold Steve Austin’s popularity was through the roof in the WWF. After his injury at SummerSlam of that year against Owen Hart however, the brakes seemed to be pressed on his momentum as it was uncertain whether he could perform in the ring going forward or not.

On the September 22nd edition of Monday Night Raw, Austin was in the ring to confront Hart but instead was greeted by McMahon, not yet on-screen owner, who reprimanded Austin for his actions in the weeks prior. Austin’s response was to surprise McMahon with a Stone Cold Stunner. The crowd went into an absolutely frenzy as McMahon lie on the ground twitching like a dry fish. Though the blood feud between the two would not truly begin until after WrestleMania XIV the next year, but this moment set the stage for the rivalry that would go on to become arguably the greatest and most influential feud in wrestling history.
