Why Bianca Belair is the breakout star of the Mae Young Classic

My excitement and expectations for the Mae Young Classic has been high since WWE announced the tournament. I thought of all of the women that could possibly be a part of it and the match ups that could take place and my love for women’s wrestling grew times one hundred.

When the competitors were announced, I shook my head and gave a rowdy ‘Yes!’ to every woman. Most of the women had been favorites of mine for a long time and I believe that this opportunity was well deserved.

There were some unfamiliar faces that I was excited to discover like Sarah Logan, Xia Li, Jazzy Gabert and certainly, the wrecking ball and last but certainly not least, the bad ass powerhouse, Ms. Bianca Belair.

I remember watching her Mae Young Classic qualifying match against Aliyah and immediately being blown away by her swagger, engagement with the crowd and impeccable timing and execution of moves. This woman has only been in the business for a year, but she can hang with wrestlers that have been around since the early 2000’s. She just gets what it takes to climb that latter and grab the brass ring. I haven’t seen a new comer that gifted and hungry in a long time, male or female.

I’m trying to see the flaws to believe that she is really in her freshman year in the business, but I can’t. The attention to detail, her well fleshed out character, head turning entrance, booming, athletic body and dynamite in ring talent leaves me in awe. Her two matches in the tournament proved that she can switch her style and fighting approach up based on who she’s matched up with.

When she fought Sage Bennett, Bianca knew she had to protect herself and physically match up to a women that had a weight and height advantage against her.

She couldn’t let herself get winded and lose control otherwise, Sage would take her apart. Bianca let Sage think she was getting the best of her, then she struck back and didn’t quit until she got the win.

Bianca’s battle with Kairi Sane was a bit different. Bianca came in with a confidence that was through the roof. She held on to the control and power in the match for a long time. Kairi would defend herself and try to change-up the pace, but, Bianca like a bull would bulldoze Sane by giving her lashes to the arms and legs with her long Rapunzuel like braid, stiff punches to the back and moves from the top rope that had the crowd on their feet.

Kairi was able to pull through and use Bianca’s confidence against her and took the win to move on. However, this phenomenal wrestler will be making waves in NXT and soon the main roster. She’s too good to be in developmental for a long time. Her involvement in the tournament was just a coming out party.

I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her and what treats she has for the WWE Universe.
