The main event for New Japan Pro Wrestling’s biggest event of the year is now set in stone.

For the fourth consecutive year, IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada will main event the Tokyo Dome show. This year, his opponent will be G1 Climax 27 winner, Tetsuya Naito. This will mark the first time that Naito has headlined a Wrestle Kingdom show.

Naito did face Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Title at Wrestle Kingdom 8 but that match was placed in the penultimate position on the card due to a fan vote. Naito secured the main event slot on this year’s card after defending his right to a world title shot at this past weekend’s King of Pro Wrestling show against Tomohiro Ishii. This year’s main event between Okada and Naito was made official during the Wrestle Kingdom 12 press conference on the following day.

Okada’s current championship reign will surpass Shinya Hashimoto’s record of 489 days before the month is out. He’ll also pass Hiroshio Tanahashi for most combined days as IWGP Heavyweight Champion just one day before the January 4th Dome Show goes live on NJPWWorld.

As of this writing, Okada versus Naito is the only match scheduled for Wrestle Kingdom 12. Expect the full card for this year’s show to be released sometime in early December.
