WrestleMania 34 Debate Series: Rousey & Angle vs. Triple H & Stephanie

First things first, it is damn nice to be here. It’s been a minute since I took my services to Fight Booth for a little back and forth with the main man Dave Reno. We did our WWE draft a while back (which I dominated), and now we’re going to talk a little about WrestleMania 34 and what matches we’re amped for, and which others do we think should go the way of the dinosaur.

Rose: I’m going to open this one up, the first in our series of back and forth articles on matches. I’ve chosen to talk about the Ronda Rousey/Kurt Angle vs. Steph/HHH mixed tag match. I think this is a complete and utter waste of Ronda’s debut, oh it’s true, it’s damn true! Ronda signed and is going to be a member of the women’s roster, why not give her a high-profile non-title fight. Bring her in and set something up with Nattie. The two have spent time training together and have good in-ring chemistry.

That would have been too easy right? We need to spotlight HHH and Steph….but why? I don’t care if I ever see Stephanie wrestle for the rest of my life. Let her get in the ring from time to time and slap someone, but it isn’t necessary to see her in the ring. I would have been cool with HHH vs. Angle in a match for old time’s sake, but this is a debacle and I’m not down for it.

I have a sinking suspicion that Dave likes this match, so I am going to turn this over to him, so he can state his reasons and I can come back and completely destroy them. Dave, it’s all, you buddy.

Reno: Thanks Dan. It’s great to have you back. I could sweet-talk you all day but it’s time to get down to brass tacts. Let me explain to you, like I always have to, why this is the perfect situation for Ronda Rousey’s WWE debut.

First off, anyone versus a McMahon (particularly Steph or Vince — Shane is a little different right now) is a perfect high-profile debut. The heat will stay on the McMahon, giving the crowd absolutely no choice but to support Ronda. You and I both know that these fans can turn on a dime and it’s very important that Ronda stays a babyface to start off her WWE career. No one is going to turn on her and root for Steph, it’s just not going to happen. Don’t get me wrong, you’re always going to have those fans that just can’t stand Ronda coming in but I’m talking about the vast majority.

This is as fool-proof as it gets — put her against anyone else and you risk the fans turning on her. Plus, let’s be honest, she’s green as grass in there right now. Having her work with three people who know this business inside and out will only help her for the long run. Big picture Daniel! We’re already throwing her into the fire here with a big program heading into Mania. She’s going to need all the help she can get out there and I’m not even talking about the wrestling. Remember the sign pointing debacle? Someone clearly told her that pointing to that sign was all that mattered. She took it way too literally. She isn’t feeling sure of herself out there because this is still outside of her world. It’s where she belongs — she’ll get there — she just needs time.

This mixed tag match is about as baby steps as you can get and it will definitely help Ronda as she likely moves towards a major singles program (make us wait for those inevitable main event singles programs with the likes of Baszler and Asuka, we’ll get there) moving into SummerSlam. This match has spectacle written all over it. Just enjoy it for what it is. When it’s all said and done, you’ll end up telling me I was right and admit you were wrong anyway. Why not get it over with? Next!

Rose: Well, Dave, it’s nice to be back and it’s nice to know you’re still teaching wrestling 101. The problem is, I’m an advanced student. While it may not yet have been announced, but we’re going to see Shane McMahon in the ring against Dolph Ziggler at WrestleMania. The last thing we need is MORE McMahons (HHH included) occupying high-profile matches. I can understand the basics pertaining to what you’re saying with Ronda needing her new babyface status protected. Nattie could have done that. Hell, any number of ladies could have done that.

I have zero issue with Ronda in the WWE. In fact, she looks genuinely happy and I have no doubt that she’ll grow into her role and become more comfortable speaking, etc. I just feel like this match doesn’t bring the excitement that should come with her in-ring debut. Only two things can happen here. Ronda pins Stephanie or HHH pins Angle. That’s it. Nothing else would make sense.

I can dig that you’re excited about her debut and that this protects her fragile babyface status. It’s Wrestlemania though brother. It’s supposed to be a showcase of their best talent. Yet we’re going to see….

HHH
Stephanie
Ronda Rousey
Kurt Angle
The Undertaker
Shane McMahon

Doesn’t inspire me, at all. Time will tell if this translates into a good match, but I have my doubts. I think sadly it is going to stretch out for months and months and at Summerslam, we’ll be seeing Rousey vs. Steph…ugh. We can agree to disagree on this one, and I’ll play nice. However, up next we’re talking Lesnar and Reigns…I might get a little out of line. 🙂 I’ll let you start with that one.
