WWEekly: The Top Talking Points of RAW, Smackdown and NXT (4.22 – 4.24.19)

on

Monday Night RAW

April 22, 2019
Wells Fargo Center
Des Moines, Indiana

– Seth Rollins opens the show and 6 men stake a claim to be the next number one contender. Those men are AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Rey Mysteio, The Miz, Drew McIntyre and Baron Corbin. Two triple threats are set up to provide a main event singles match that will decide the new number one contender.

– AJ Styles defeats Samoa Joe and Rey Mysterio via Styles Clash to Mysterio on top of Joe, pinning Joe.

– Baron Corbin defeats The Miz and Drew McIntyre via stolen Claymore Kick.

– Naomi defeats Billie Kay via Sunset Flip Pin.

– A newly switched Cesaro defeats the call up Cedric Alexander via Pop Up Uppercut

– The Viking Raiders (another name change, much better than Viking Experience) kill the Lucha House Party.

– Sami Zayn runs down the WWE Universe with another burning promo.

– Becky Lynch has a promo war with Lacey Evans then defeats Alicia Fox via Disarm-her. Evans attacks after the match laying out Lynch with two Women’s Rights

– The newly christened Robert Roode defeats Ricochet via Glorious DDT (I also have to mention the pornstache Roode is now rocking).

– Firefly Fun House airs showing a newly designed Bray Wyatt. The video feels like a creepier version of Blues Clues to UK viewers and maybe a sinister Mr Rodgers to American viewers? There are ties to the old persona’s Wyatt has had in the puppet friends he has and he takes a chainsaw to a cardboard cut-out of his old self to end the segment. This earns my moment of the week as it was well-played by Wyatt, creepy and offers so much potential going forward.

– AJ Styles defeats Baron Corbin via Phenomenal Forearm. He is the new number one contender for the Universal Title and will be taking on Seth Rollins at Money in the Bank.

Smackdown Live

April 23, 2019
Pinnacle Bank Arena
Lincoln, Nebraska

– Shane McMahon calls out Roman Reigns for hurting his dear old daddy. Roman comes to the ring but is ambushed by Elias. Everyone brawls until Elias is able to hit the Drift Away on Roman. Elias sings Roman a challenge later in the show and the two now have a singles bout at Money in the Bank.

– Finn Balor defeats Andrade via Coup de Grace after some Zelina Vega interference goes wrong.

– Aleister Black has a video promo talking about discovering the real Aleister Black. He is a solo competitor on Smackdown now and this package may be hinting at a heel turn. No man is ever truly evil… or is he?

– Lars Sullivan destroys Chad Gable and the Singh brothers before Gable can have a match with Jinder Mahal (another Smackdown move.) R Truth tries to come out and get some revenge on Sullivan but is flattened before he can really do anything.

– Kairi Sane defeats Peyton Royce via Insane Elbow. Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville sarcastically applaud the winner from the ramp.

– Becky Lynch and Charlotte have a war of words arguing over Charlotte never got pinned to lose her title and how Becky is sick of fighting Charlotte. Bayley comes out to interrupt them both and demands a match with Charlotte to decide a number one contender.

-Charlotte defeats Bayley via Spear. Disappointing result but hopefully this is the last Becky/Charlotte match we get for a while as their feud is starting to get unbelievably tedious.

– Kofi Kingston defeats Shinsuke Nakamura via DQ. Rusev tries to attack but is put out by the New Day. Big O Kevin Owens turns on Kofi Kingston and tries to destroy him with an Apron Powerbomb. Xavier makes the save but ends up eating the Apron Powerbomb instead. The show ends with Owens walking up the ramp surveying his destruction.

NXT

April 24, 2019 (Air Date)
Full Sail Live
Winter Park, Florida

– Jaxson Ryker vs Humberto Carrillo ends in double count out after Ryker loses it and throws Carrillo around the outside. He tries to inflict more punishment after the match but the chair wielding duo of Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch keep him at bay.

– Matt Riddle mocks Adam Cole for being jealous of Roderick Strong backstage.

– Candice LeRae & Kacy Catanzaro defeat Vanessa Borne & Aliyah via Cabrada.

– Io Shirai attacked backstage by the Horsewomen of MMA.

– Kushida’s first opponent is decided as Kassius Ohno. The match happens next week.

– The War Raiders/Viking Raiders (MAKE YOUR MIND UP WWE) defeat Street Profits via Thor’s Hammer (Pop up Powerslam) Street Profits try to jump before the bell but are unable to keep Rowe down, meaning the Raiders could get back into the match. Also bonus points to Montez Ford for his scream at the incoming arse of Hanson coming for him in the corner.

– Johnny Gargano defeats Roderick Strong via Slingshot DDT. This was an excellent match that ended in chaos as the Era tried to come out to help Strong but ended up costing him the match as Adam Cole accidently kicked him in the face. There was a lot of confusion as Matt Riddle had come out to attack the attacking Era. Strong took the loss well for now but there is some tensions bubbling under the surface.

In Conclusion

So there you have it, the big results from this week’s big WWE shows. Surprisingly all three shows were a lot of fun this week with a lot of big moments and surprising. Next week is looking even better with the impending Kushida/Ohno match on the horizon. The Undisputed Era drama is looking fun and I cannot wait for the next episode of Firefly Fun House to see the next sinister turn this new character could take. It’s been a successful week that I hope captures that momentum and keeps it going.
